Still haven't bought a tractor, but getting much closer to a decision. I was looking at the MMMs for the TC33DA and had a question about the side discharge, model 914a. How big is that sheild that channels the grass clippings? From photos it appears to be something like 6-8 inches.
The reason why I ask is, I was probably going to get a 60 side discharge, I would like a 60 rear discharge, but it is not available for the 33da. Then I noticed the discharge sheild, and thought, okay, the actual mowing coverage is 60", then add on the extra incheds for the discharge sheild, and you are closer to the 72" deck. So if you are already closer to that, go ahead and do the couple of extra inches and get the rear discharge mulcher deck, right? One reason that I wanted the 60 was for mobility through and around trees, but with that discharge sheild hanging out, I don't think that the 72" would be much worse. Am I right in assuming this?

I'm not sure about New Holland, but on my Kubota which I have the 60" MMM, it will not fit through the 6 foot doors on my shed without raising the guard and then it just barely squeezes through. I also have to be careful not to raise the guard to far while going into the shed or it will catch on the R-4 tires. Just some info about how big the MMM can really be. I wouldn't trade it for the world though as the cut is awesome.
Good luck. ....

Ever had any matting with a rear-discharge because it doesn't spread the material out quickly enough before the rear tires run over it? I'm about to buy a 60" rear-discharge MMM and the dealer is doing his best to talk me out of it because he says it will do this matting thing. ....

I have a TC33D with a 72" MMM side discharge. With the side chute attached the grass will windrow. Without the chute it spreads the grass out evenly. ....

When here on the board you have the chance to listen to more people from around the country and things are different in different areas. Here in central NY the rear discharges unless mowing on a very regular schedule of about every four days in the spring windrowing is a problem and for even side discharge mowers but more common on mulchers. Large openings on side discharge mowers might not give as much problem but people often have the discharge chutes opened so not to windrow from the shield. IF you have fast growing thick lawns you might not want the rear discharge. ....
